Europe is generally known to be an expensive destination.But that doesn't mean it's not possible to visit it on the cheap. While backpacking around the region isn't as affordable as Southeast Asia, there are a few places where you'll be able to stretch your budget further and see more for less.

You may have to take Paris or London off your list, but you'll be rewarded with unique destinations and fewer crowds - yes please! All you need to do is plan ahead, choose your accommodation wisely, eat how the locals do, and you'll be exploring Europe without breaking the bank.

Here are some of the cheapest European countries to backpack!

Want to get off the beaten backpacker route? Head to Slovakia. It's more popular neighbours Prague and Vienna often steal the spotlight, but that doesn't mean you should give this city a miss.

Backpacking is Bratislava will only set you back EUR 25 a day, and there's more than enough to keep you entertained. From its historic city centre to its horror film themed hostels, it's a unique and affordable backpacking option.

 

Amsterdam, Netherlands

No Euro trip would be complete without a stop in Amsterdam. Home to outdoor markets, interesting museums and rich history, it's easy to spend a couple of weeks here and still not want to leave.

But for budget travellers, it's also a welcome reprieve from the price tag of the rest of Europe. Hostels are cheap, there's a ton of free things to do, and its pub crawl tours are a great way to meet other shoestring travellers.

Bucharest is the country's capital city, and one of it's most affordable destinations. You'll find low prices on food, dirt cheap accommodation and top-notch attractions.

Make sure you check out the Palace of Parliament - it's the most expensive and heaviest civilian building in the world.
