The whale shark is the largest fish in the world and can grow up to 15 meters in length. The whale shark prefers the warm surface water in areas where there are upwellings of cold water rich in nutrients, like the ones between Isla Mujeres and Holbox island in summer time, since these conditions favour the growth of plankton on which they feed. The whale shark has nothing in common with whales except for its size and the fact that it only eats tiny plankton that gathers with his mouth open. Normally it feeds on the surface or slightly below. Whale sharks are very docile and gentle, do not get scared when they are approaching divers or swimmers.
