Want to escape the crowds that flock to France, Spain and Italy?

Head to the eastern European country of Romania. Famous for its legend of Count Dracula, the country is full of history. From its incredible castles, spectacular scenery and unique wildlife, it's an off the beaten track destination and will steal your heart without breaking the bank.

If you're wondering what the country has to offer, here are some of the best travel experiences in Romania that you don't want to miss.

1.Tackle the Transfagarasan - One of The Best Roads in the World

The Transfaragarsan is a hair-raising trip through the Transylvanian Alps. You'll reach elevations as high as 7,200 feet and wind around hairpin turns, deep tunnels and viaducts.

But the road is only fully open in the summer months, so if you're a Top Gear fan and want to cross this adventure off your list, book your trip between June and August.

2. Visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Brasov

If you're a nature lover, a stop here is a must. The sanctuary is on a mission to save Romania's threatened wildlife and has rescued 95 bears from a life of abuse and captivity so far.

You'll get to learn more about the European Brown Bear and what you can do to help while watching them live out their natural lives.

3. Explore the painted monasteries of Bucovina

The painted monasteries of Bucovina is one of Romania's most impressive historical attractions. Dating back to the 15th century, the monasteries are now a UNESCO Heritage Site and are revered for their authentic pieces of Byzantine art.

Located in Moldavia, the buildings are decorated with Christian frescoes that have survived the invading Ottoman forces, the Habsburg Emperors and decades of neglect.

4. Go Castle Hopping and Discover Romania's Medieval Past

No trip to Romania would be complete without exploring some of its famous castles.

From it's famous Bran Castle, believed to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker's novel Count Dracula, to Peles Castle, a Neo-Renaissance masterpiece located in the Carpathian Mountains.

If you're still in the mood for more medieval history, add the fortresses of Poienari and Rasnov to your list.

5. Make Your Way to Romania's 12th Century Saxon Villages

A trip to the Saxon villages is one of the best travel experiences in Romania. You'll step back in time as you explore the medieval towns, fortified churches and witness the daily village life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Some of the region's highlights include Viscri's UNESCO listed church, Saschiz' 15th-century clock tower and Biertan's well-preserved gothic church.

6. Book a Walking Tour of Brasov

Brasov is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It dates back to 1234 and is now an important economic and cultural hub in Romania. If you want to learn more about it's past, sign up for a walking tour and hit the streets.

Your guide will take you to some of Brasov's most important buildings as you learn about the events that have impacted the city over the centuries.
